With the start of the Paris 2024 Olympics just an hour away, this week I wanted to share an article I wrote in 2017 about Julia Child, Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique and French-American political dynamics in the Cold War years. It’s an edible history deep dive into culinary diplomacy — which at this moment, feels quite relevant. Bon appétit!


In 1961, John F. Kennedy was inaugurated as the 35th president of the United States, Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man to travel in space, construction began on the Berlin Wall and Julia Child, an American from Pasadena, California published her seminal cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking.
