All of August I’m writing about the tomato. Its origins in the Americas, its history, its colonization, and its post-1492 life as a symbol of Italian cuisine. Here you can find part 1, part 2, and part 3.

My inbox is currently filled with Labor Day weekend recipes. It’s “The End of Summer!” The “Last Hurrah” for summer produce! (though it isn’t really). And while I definitely want to make Alison Roman’s grilled chicken, and I’ve seen more than one citrusy seafood dish that looks like it might actually be capable of transporting you to a late lunch on an Adriatic beach — this week my contribution to the throngs of late summer/ holiday weekend recipes is, a very simple tomato sauce.
